Writing your first web page in Microsoft Windows
This document gives a brief discussion of creating a web page and opening
it using Netscape 6.1 under the Microsoft Windows operating system. It
assumes familiarity with basic Windows concepts.
This document does not cover transmitting the web page to a web server or
putting it in the proper location on the CS Linux machines. These topics
will be covered in the tutorial sessions.
Entering the HTML
You will need to input your HTML code in raw text format. Do not use
a word-processing program such as Microsoft Word! You should use the
built-in text editor Notepad.
Opening Notepad
To open Notepad,
- Click on the Start menu
- Go to Programs...
- Go to Accessories...
- Click on Notepad
Entering and saving your HTML document
- Type in your HTML code
- Save your result using File...Save
- Make sure that you type in the filename as "filename.html"
rather than just "filename". Otherwise Notepad will think that
it is just a text document.
Looking at the results in Netscape 6.1
Since I currently have Netscape 6.1 as my default browser under Windows,
we'll use that one. Other browsers are similar if not identical.
- Open Netscape
- Click on File on the top menu.
- Click on Open File...(As opposed to Open Web Location...)
- Open your file.
This should load the web page you have created. You can make changes
by editing your code in Notepad and clicking the Reload button in
your browser.
