Cinema studies is devoted to the study of the moving image (and its sound
accompaniments) in various contexts and disciplines. Courses offered under this
heading approach film (and related media such as television and video) on
different levels and from diverse perspectives: textual analysis; film theory
and aesthetics; film history; the cinema as an institution; the cinema's
relation to other cultural practices, from art and literature to commercial
entertainment and consumption; and national cinemas, transnational flows, and
global culture.
Students are encouraged to use this listing of faculty and course offerings as
a resource: for the purpose of constructing an interdisciplinary concentration
in cinema studies that, for the time being, can be pursued within General
Studies in the Humanities; for the purpose of designing individual programs
within departments or disciplines; and finally, as an aid for the allocation of
electives. For further work in cinema studies, students are also encouraged to
investigate other courses taught by the resource faculty.
